ANCIENT SAMURAI
During the time of the feudal system in Medieval Japan, Japanese samurai were warriors of the shogun rulers. While their heritages are unidentified, they were known for being fearsome in combat and fast on horseback. In the 8th century, Japans government sent warriors to calm savages in northern Honshu.
The government depended deeply on these warriors for protection in time for war. The word “samurai” which means ‘those who serve’ came into use around this period. The samurai were also employed be wealthy landowners, who were apprehensive for their safety while local fraternities fought over land and power. In exchange for protection and devotion, the samurai were given land and privileges. By this period the first signs of samurai tradition was beginning to be accepted by the samurai, including leather and metal armour and curved blades.
